For most of the last two years, Reston Town Center has had one main street and one experiment happening a few blocks south. This fall, the experiment caught up. The stretch of Inspiration Street and Opportunity Way known as RTC Next, and the newer cluster at Reston Station called Reston Row, both crossed from "under construction" to "open for dinner" within the same few months. The walk between Wiehle-Reston East Metro and the Reston Town Center Metro stop, which used to be mostly a walk, now has somewhere to stop along the way.
Reston Town Center itself already carries more than 35 restaurants and 50 retailers under its own roof, by the property's own count. That number was never really in question. What's changed is everything within a ten-minute walk of it.
What’s open and coming south of Sunset Hills Road
The RTC Next expansion sits just south of Sunset Hills Road, wedged between the AC Hotel, the Skymark Apartments, and the office buildings that went up first. For a while it was mostly scaffolding and leasing signs. That stopped being true this year.
Clarity opened its second location in the RTC Next block this spring. The original Clarity has been a fixture in Vienna since 2015, at 442 Maple Avenue, with a RAMMY-studded reputation and fan favorites like halibut, foie gras, steaks and chops, and French onion soup. The Reston menu carries the same register, plus a Smoked Wagyu Cheeseburger and a six-course tasting option, along with a to-go menu the Vienna location never had.
Toastique opened earlier this year as well, tucked under the new Skymark Apartments, giving the block a breakfast option that didn't exist a year ago. Grazie Nonna, an Italian American restaurant with a sister deli called Grazie Grazie attached, is running at 11995 Inspiration Street, serving eggplant parmigiana and calamari on the full menu side and shaved ribeye cheesesteaks on the grab-and-go side. Paris Baguette, the French-inspired pastry and coffee chain, took a 3,150-square-foot space at 1975 Opportunity Way, across from the AC Hotel.
The one still filling in is Dogfish Head Alehouse. The management group behind Clarity acquired what was the brand's only remaining location, in Gaithersburg, earlier this year and is targeting a fall opening for a second life of it inside RTC Next. Yunnan by Potomac Noodle House is staged for the same stretch of 2026, bringing a regional Chinese menu that nothing else in Reston is currently doing.
What a first-ever expansion says about the other end
A half mile east, near the Wiehle-Reston East Metro, a different cluster has been filling in at Reston Station. Noku Sushi opened there earlier this year, adding ramen, sashimi, and Korean barbecue to a corridor that didn't have much of any of those before. The name drawing more attention is Ebbitt House, which will be the first location Old Ebbitt Grill has ever opened outside Washington, D.C. The original has been serving oysters near the White House since 1856. A restaurant with that much institutional weight in the District doesn't pick a location to test the market. It picks a location it thinks has already arrived.
That's the detail that separates this year's openings from a normal retail cycle. Restaurants like Clarity and Ebbitt House already had a proven audience somewhere else. Choosing Reston for the next chapter, rather than a more established D.C. suburb, is itself a signal about where people in this region are already choosing to eat.
The calendar bookending both ends of the walk
None of this happened in isolation from Reston's usual fall programming. If anything, this year's calendar sits directly on top of the new corridor, with events at the Pavilion on the north end and the restaurant buildout doing the work on the south end.
| Date | Event | Location |
|---|---|---|
| Fridays through October | Happy Hour with Darden & Friends | Town Square Park |
| October 3 | DogFest Washington DC, benefiting Canine Companions | Reston Town Center Pavilion |
| October 8-12 | Washington West Film Festival | LOOK Cinemas at Reston Town Center |
| October 10 | Rocktoberfest, headlined by Vertical Horizon with Virginia Coalition and Everything | Reston Town Center Pavilion |
The Washington West Film Festival is worth a second look on its own terms. It's built around a model where the festival gives away 100 percent of its net box office proceeds to philanthropic projects, which means a ticket to a screening this October is also a ticket to something outside the theater. Rocktoberfest, on October 10, runs free from 5 to 11 p.m. at the Pavilion, with drinks available from participating restaurants along the way.
The middle finally has something in it
The trail network and the village centers, Hunters Woods, North Point, Tall Oaks, still handle the daily errands the way they always have. That rhythm hasn't changed and isn't going to. What's different is the mile of ground between the two Metro stops, which used to be a stretch you drove past on your way somewhere else. This fall, for the first time, it's a stretch you can spend an evening in.
A Saturday built around that stretch might look like coffee or a smoothie bowl at Toastique, a walk north to whatever the Pavilion has running that weekend, and dinner back at Clarity or Grazie Nonna before heading home on foot. Two years ago, half of those stops didn't exist. This year, they're all a few minutes apart.
If you're the kind of neighbor who tracks openings before they hit the review sites, Josh Harris keeps a running list of what's landing next in Reston, from restaurant leases to the Pavilion's next season, and shares it with anyone who wants the update before the line forms.
